Greenlok™ Vegetated Wall System

What are the benefits of the Greenlok MSE Bag System?

Greenlok bags are geotextile-based and are fully manufactured in the UK. The system requires very limited excavation making Greenlok bags ideal for areas where the footprint of other solutions would not be possible. Greenlok bags can be installed to fit with the existing landscape contours or to reestablish embankments that have been eroded by water action, or mechanical forces. They are relatively easy to install, even for less experienced personnel, saving time and labour costs. The square metre cost of a Greenlok retaining wall is likely to be up to 50% lower than a comparable hard landscaping option.

Bag Fill

Bags can be supplied both unfilled and filled. Greenfix recommends a soil/sand mix to fill bags that will be vegetated rather than using composts or other organic materials which will slump as they decompose over time leaving voids in the bags. For bags that are situated at the bottom of a retaining wall, Greenfix suggests a gravel fill to provide a stable base and free drainage for the structure.

Vegetation

The bags rely on vegetation to provide the ultra-violet resistance. Vegetation should be applied to the structure within two weeks of vegetated bag system placement. Bags shall be watered prior to installing any vegetation. Soak bags thoroughly using low pressure

water source. Greenlok bags can be internally seeded, but experience has shown that Hydroseeding or placing Greenfix’s pre-seeded Covamat™ over the bags offers quicker germination and better coverage of vegetation.

Reinforcement

Uniaxial Geogrid reinforcement can be used to reinforce any installation of Greenlok bags. It should certainly be used on all sections of wall exceeding 2 metres in height. Professional design support should be sought to confirm the correct geogrid grade and the number of layers to be used for individual applications. Place Geogrid onto the backfill and over the course bags below, referring to the site-specific design drawing for correct placements. Wrap the geogrid around the face of the bags to a maximum of 3 courses. Place spikes on top of the Geogrid before placing the next course. Geogrid should be pulled taut, and backfilling carried out from front to rear of the structure.
